We are a midsize, mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to improving our community through educational and social programs. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Controller to lead our finance and accounting operations. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact while ensuring the financial stability and compliance of our organization.


Position Summary

The Controller will oversee all financial activities of the organization, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in nonprofit financial management, government reporting, and team leadership. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.


Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.

• Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

• Lead the preparation of the annual audit and IRS Form 990.

• Ensure compliance with CFR (Consolidated Fiscal Reporting) and all applicable federal, state, and city regulations.

• Manage financial reporting and submissions through NYC Department of Education (NYC DOE) portals and other government systems.

• Develop, monitor, and manage annual budgets and cash flow projections.

• Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.

• Supervise and mentor accounting and finance staff.

• Serve as liaison with auditors, funding agencies, and program management staff.


Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.

• Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in a nonprofit organization.

• Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, including CFR and Form 990 compliance.

• Experience working with NYC DOE financial systems and reporting portals.

• Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

• Proven ability to lead and develop a small accounting team in a fast-paced environment.
