
Construction Company Controller & Bookkeeper in our Rockland County office
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controller & Bookkeeper with a strong background in construction accounting to manage day to day bookkeeping while overseeing all financial operations. This role requires deep knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, retainage, AIA billing, and construction payroll, ensuring accurate financial reporting, cash flow management, and compliance across all projects.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Bookkeeping
• Full cycle bookkeeping: AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, bank and credit card reconciliations
• Process vendor bills, subcontractor payments, lien waivers, and retainage
• Maintain construction specific chart of accounts
• Track loans and project financing
• Maintain job costing and cost code
• Track labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and change orders
• Prepare and manage Work in Progress (WIP) schedules
• Handle AIA/progress billing and over/under billings
• Monitor project budgets
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Monitor and forecast cash flow
• Provide reporting for ownership
• Process construction payroll
• Ensure labor costs are properly allocated by job and cost code
• Coordinate payroll taxes, sales tax filings, and year-end reporting with CPA
• Support audits, bonding, insurance, and lender requirements
• Maintain and optimize construction accounting systems
• Implement internal controls and improve accounting processes
• Maintain organized and audit-ready financial records
Qualifications
• 5+ years construction accounting experience
• Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP, retainage, AIA billing, and construction payroll
• Proficiency in Quickbooks and Excel
• Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to manage multiple projects
