About the Opportunity
A growing nonprofit organization in Brooklyn is hiring an Assistant Controller / Senior Accountant to join its finance team.
This is a strong opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys detailed financial work, understands the accounting cycle, and is ready to take ownership of important accounting responsibilities. The role is ideal for someone who is accurate, organized, analytical, and comfortable working closely with senior finance leadership.
The right candidate will support the controller with day-to-day accounting, payroll-related accounting, reconciliations, fund accounting, reporting, audit support, and special projects.
Responsibilities
- Produce daily cash balance reports
- Monitor daily bank activity for regular and unusual items
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations
- Follow up with members of the finance department regarding outstanding items
- Review payroll before processing and help ensure accounts are funded appropriately
- Prepare and post journal entries related to payroll and benefits
- Reconcile general ledger payroll and benefits accounts to invoices, tax forms, and supporting documentation
- Assist with credit card management
- Provide audit support
- Assist with financial analysis, reconciliations, reports, and accounting projects
- Support fund accounting processes and help ensure funding sources are tracked properly
- Review financial information for accuracy and identify discrepancies
- Work closely with the controller and finance team to support accurate and timely accounting operations
Requirements and Qualifications
- 3–5 years of accounting experience required
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting strongly preferred
- Finance degree or equivalent strong accounting experience may be considered
- CPA preferred
- Strong understanding of the accounting cycle
- Working knowledge of Excel, including pivot tables and lookups
- Familiarity with basic payroll concepts and related taxes
- Fund accounting experience preferred
- Nonprofit accounting experience preferred
- Strong verbal, written, and listening skills
- Ability to manage responsibilities without constant supervision
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
