Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Special Education Attorney to represent families of students with disabilities in impartial hearings against the NYC Department of Education. This role involves advocating for appropriate educational services, compensatory education, tuition reimbursement, and other remedies under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and New York State Education Law.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent parents and guardians in Impartial Hearings under the IDEA against the NYC DOE.
- Conduct client intake, legal analysis, and determine case strategies.
- Draft and file Due Process Complaints, legal briefs, hearing requests, and post-hearing submissions.
- Appear before Impartial Hearing Officers (IHOs), present testimony, cross-examine witnesses, and advocate for client relief.
- Work with experts including psychologists, therapists, and educational consultants.
- Negotiate and draft settlement agreements when appropriate.
- Maintain accurate case records and comply with procedural deadlines.
- Collaborate with paralegals, advocates, and administrative staff to support client needs.
